Marie Laveau has been a recurring motif in Renée Stout’s body of sculptural and graphic work. The artist created the “Marie Laveau” lithograph portrait in 2009. In 2010, Stout decided to explore a “colorized” version of “Marie Laveau,” creating a color maquette from a lithograph proof which was further digitally altered to produce the archival pigment print shown below. The “Marie Laveau” pigment print was featured on the cover of the “Tales of the Conjure Woman” exhibition catalog.
